For all Consultants

  • NATSPEC can advise on surge protection specifications. For those of you not familiar with NATSPEC you can visit www.natspec.com.au Below is a brief explanation:
  • NATSPEC is the trading name of Construction Information Systems Limited, ABN 20 117 574 606.
  • NATSPEC, founded in 1975, is a not-for-profit organisation that is owned by the design, build, construct and property industry through professional associations and government property groups. It is impartial and is not involved in advocacy or policy development.
  • NATSPEC's major service is the comprehensive national specification system endorsed by government and professional bodies.
  • NATSPEC, the National Building Specification, is for all building structures with specialist packages for architects, interior designers, landscape architects, structural engineers, service engineers and domestic owners.
  • AUS-SPEC is the Local Government specification system for the life-cycle management of assets. Packages include Urban and Open Space, Roadworks and Bridges, Public Utilities, and Maintenance.
  • NATSPEC's aims are to provide economies of scale for its stakeholders and to improve the quality of construction in Australia via the provision of information, tools, products and services.
  • The NATSPEC documents are used by many consultants, government departments and construction companies as the basis of building specifications. Section 09 of NATSPEC relates to Electrical Services.
  • 0943 relates to primary protection of main switchboards, secondary protection of sub boards and the use of series filters combining primary and secondary protection.
Novaris Products comply 100%.

Primary Protection

For primary protection the specification calls for MOV base SPDs with Imax of 150kA.  Recommended is the SD3-150-275 or SD3-200-275. Or another option is the SDN3-150-275 or SDN3-200-275. If the main switchboard does not have an MEN the SDN is more convenient because it has inbuilt N-E protection. The metal case requirement is a standard casing for Novaris Products.

Secondary Protection

For secondary protection the spec calls for MOV based SPDs with Imax of 50kA. The SDD3-50-275 or SDD3-100-275 are fully compliant. Take note that N-E protection is required on all sub boards.

Combined Primary and Secondary Protection

This is an additional section about filters for use in places like data centres, defence, telecommunications, broadcasting, cell sites  and so forth.   With the upcoming NBN and the need for new data and switching centres there is a requirement for high current filters.

In general these specifications follow the recommendations of AS1768-2007. The final stage of protection is a small filter on racks for server rooms, fires panels, security, CCTV, telecom PABXs and the likes. The remaining sections have specs for these applications and Novaris are compliant in all instances. For hard wired filters the SFD from 2A to 20A comply. Or a PP10.
